Subaru vehicles are engineered to protect its occupants in a crash. The steel is heated to make it more durable. The engines are directed to go under the cockpit instead of into it. The brand’s obsession with safety has become legendary. EMTs and first responders have even coined a nickname for Subaru vehicles at a crash scene: “walk-away cars.” Subaru gets letters and emails every month from owners telling their stories of walking away from a crash, so we decided the truth would make a powerful commercial. We worked to find a Subaru Outback that had been in a terrible crash in which the driver survived; a vehicle so mangled that when you saw it, it would be very powerful. Then, from the police at the scene to the tow-truck driver to the workers at the scrap yard, we showed people reacting to the news that “they lived.”
